Tell me, is it neccessary to do all this if just replacing the water pump? I have a 2003 Turbo Diesel 3.0L Hilux and want to make sure the engine cooling is spot on, so looking to replace the radiator, hoses and pump with brand new.

Not sure if I am comfortable playing around with the timing pulley etc.

Thanks

No worries Patrick, I hope that you were able to get it sorted without too much hassle. I know what you mean with the cover, a good lesson in how to turn something so basic and simple into something that is a complete a#se to remove and refit! Crazy isn't it.

Regards,
Craig

Thanks a million Craig. I was about to head for the mountains with my wife last week in my Hilux (year 2000 3.0D 5L raised body DC), we went to get supplies and when we got home I noticed a smell of burning rubber. I opened the bonnet and felt the radiator cap - it was stone cold (!) after a trip of about 80km. The temperature gauge was at the normal level. The engine was so hot that 3 hrs later it was still warm but thank the Lord it hadn't seized. The rad was full of water but I noticed drops of coolant under the engine on the drivers side and also on the passenger side. Got back from the mountains yesterday (we had to take the wife's car) and went to buy a new water pump this morning. I got to the point of taking off the crank pulley but I don't have the necessary pullers so I'll be completing the job at a friend's workshop during the week. Really appreciate your clear step-by-step instructions. I'd love to meet the Japanese comedian who designed the timing belt cover on these engines, they could have made the job so much simpler.

Excellent DIY instructions and accompanying pictures.Only point I found missing was the mention that a puller was required to remove the crankshaft sprocket in order to replace the crankshaft oil seal.
